Why the UAE Remains the Entry Point for International Business in 2026

July 3, 20263 min read

In 2024, the UAE's non-oil foreign trade reached AED 3 trillion — growth that outpaced the global trade average by more than double. Much of that momentum comes from trading and brokerage companies operating through the country's network of more than 45 specialized free zones.

Why free zones specifically

Independent research shows that businesses registered in UAE free zones reach full operational capacity up to 40% faster than the regional average. The structural reasons are straightforward: 100% foreign ownership with no local partner requirement, fast registration (as little as three business days in some zones), and licenses tailored to specific industries, from commodity trading to technology.

The momentum shows clearly in the financial centres too: in Q1 2026, DIFC recorded 775 new company formations — a 62% increase over the same period a year earlier. In Abu Dhabi, ADGM crossed 12,000 licences, with assets under management up 36%.

It's not just tax benefits

Back in 2020, a legal reform allowed 100% foreign ownership across more than 1,000 economic activities on the UAE mainland — previously requiring a 51% Emirati partner. That reform lowered a structural barrier to entry, but free zones remain the preferred choice for companies whose customers are international rather than local.

DMCC, one of the largest zones focused on commodity trading, now spans more than 1,000 licensed activities across 20 sectors — from gold and precious metals to consulting and AI. It reflects a broader shift: UAE free zones have moved well past being a convenient address and have become full operating infrastructure for international business.

What this means in practice

For a company entering markets across the Middle East, Asia, and Africa, the question is increasingly not whether to register in the UAE, but which free zone and which structure. The zone you choose determines which activities you can license, how quickly you reach full operational capacity, and how smoothly you can work with international counterparties and banks.
